The Damage is Done
The United Kingdom
is divided. Divided by age, education and by employment. [1] The retired and
the poorly educated voted Conservative, the young and degree educated voted
Labour. This speaks of something wrong with our society; the answer is
education and the media.
The media bears the
brunt of the blame for this situation. We read the media to gain insight into
what is going on in the world around us. This should come in the form of
impartial facts and figures that enlighten the public.
Instead we are
bombarded with fear-mongering headlines blaming the EU for the Grenfell Tower
disaster, blaming immigration for the lack of jobs and, blaming Muslims for the
terrorist attacks. The bare smattering of facts carefully selected and injected
into these reports adds the credibility that has people believing them.
A balanced review
has been obliterated by the prevalence of scandalous, emotive headlines that do
nothing but spark fear and anger in the public. The nation's vote and therefore
the nation has been controlled and is still controlled, by those that control
the media.
The rhetoric that
austerity will improve the country has been pushed through the media, yielding
cuts to public sectors, police, firefighters, the NHS, and education. If our
children do not have the basic resources in their schools, how can they be
taught to think and to grow, to critically think about the media that is
force-fed to the country?
They can't.
Keeping the
population uninformed and misinformed about the world around them leads to a
population that will blindly accept the status quo. A few, very rich people,
are making money off our ignorance.
Feeding money to the
rich and taxing the poor is killing our country. We need change, and we need it
now.
